Young Scientist organisers call for an early approach to meet increasing demand for STEM graduates

Organisers of the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition, have suggested that Ireland needs to take an early, more rounded, approach to fostering an interest in STEM with students. This comes as this year’s Leaving Cert results show an increase, under the new marking scheme, of student securing top level marks in STEM subjects such as physics, chemistry, biology, technical graphics, and maths.

A study published in England concluded that pupils without instant recall of multiplication tables struggle in maths. According to Ofsted’s education director: ”It is really important that children have the tools of arithmetic at their finger tips. Without that it is like sending a plumber out to do a job without knowing how to use a spanner.”

Positive feedback from Mullingar school inspections

The Board of Management and science teachers of Loreto College, Mullingar, one of two local schools who had inspection reports posted on the Department of Education website recently, expressed their disappointment that the delayed building project has resulted in the failure to provide two new laboratories at the school.
